I have been a reader of Gunnerkrigg Court online for a while now, knowing it was published after about four months of reading I finally decided to invest in the book. I was not disappointed by this book at all. It is gorgeous, the image quality is on-par with the comic. The pages were a little smaller than I expected, but still big enough I would have never complained. Siddell has also greatly developed as an artist from page one to page 300 (yeah, it's pretty long), which is a slight concern - you will see a completely different comic by the end from what you see in the beginning. Where it lacks in consistency in the artwork, however, it makes up for in quality in the final product... the style has developed into something of brilliance.

My suggestion is to get it while it is still in print, and quickly before the second edition comes out. You will not be disappointed.

Gunnerkrigg Court was suggested in a list of top webcomics a bunch of friends were reading, by more than a few people. Most descriptions I could find about the series mentioned comparisons to Harry Potter, which I think most any story set in a boarding school nowadays will be subjected to. If it helps Tom gain a few more readers because of the connection I say it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Like most webcomics the story and art start off a touch wobbly, though Tom was already a fairly accomplished artist by the time he started his Webcomic. I love that the book is full color, and I love the solid heft and weight of the book. It feels significant. And by the end of the first volume the story follows suit. He begins to weave in a significant mythos to the world of Gunnerkrigg, doling out snippets of the backstory a chapter at a time.

By the end of Antimony's first year at school you're left begging for more. Tom has done a wonderful job pacing the revelations of the deep and varied world he's created, and I can't wait for my copy of volume 2 to arrive. Looking at the latest pages he's posted on the site, his art just continues to improve by leaps and bounds.
Gunnerkrigg Court is one of my top three favorite graphic stories. The artwork is phenomenal, and over the years has grown to a elegance rarely seen online. I bought the books so I could have the opportunity to thank the author/artist. I just felt that for the enjoyment that I received, he deserves some of my money. I have found that many comic/graphic novels are of good quality, but lack a robust and "substantial feel". This book is quite the opposite. I spent many years in the art supply industry, so I am a bit of a paper aficionado, and the quality of the paper and binding was more than I expected. Thick, clean, and glossy paper with printing that has firm, clear, and dense inking.

The story is a mix of fun and serious story telling. A solid and enjoyable read. If you have never read GC, please do so. You will not be disappointed. Siddell deserves the recognition as a premier story teller and artist. This book is worth every penny.
I've been reading the webcomic for years. The wonderful art gets better as the story progresses. Fun, interesting characters. The story rambles somewhat, but in an enjoyable way.
I've been reading "Gunnerkrigg Court" for a while now as a webcomic. I've been looking for something to spark my daughter's interest in reading and when I saw this was available, I jumped on it hard.

Phil and Kaja Foglio, of "Girl Genius!" fame, coined the term gaslamp fantasy to distinguish their fantasy-laden sci-fi from harder "steampunk" sci-fi written in the gaslight Victorian era. This book occupies a similar space, mixing theology, magic and science. Mostly, of course, it is a wonderful story. Antimony Carver reminds me of Camille Paglia's effusive praise of Alice in the Carroll books "Alice's resilient feminity shows the power of Victorian womanhood. Rarely fearful and never frail or hysterical..." Recently deprived of her parents by her mother's death, Carver is a firmly stoic girl who reserves her breakdowns for private times with her close friend, Kat.

The quality of the book itself was surprising. Heavy, glossy paper and solidly bound, I was genuinely shocked when I picked it out of the box. Delightful all around, and I hope it gets lots of use over the years.
I was introduced to Gunnerkrigg Court by a friend several years ago and have been following it since. This serious is beautiful, thoughtful, exciting, and just all around interesting. The art has changed and improved so much since the beginning of the series, and Tom keeps releasing beautiful prints on his store.

Without giving too much away, the main character is Antimony (or "Annie") Carver. She begins attending Gunnerkrigg Court halfway through the school year and slowly starts to unveil the mysteries of the Court, their relationship with the forest that surrounds them, and the various oddities scampering about. (Robots, ghosts, spirits of possession, etc.)

Gunnerkrigg Court is an interesting mix of science and fantasy, covering a great range of characters throughout their time there. Annie is interesting, but she is flawed-- and no character is without one or two dark secrets. This is a great read-- you can visit gunnerkrigg.com to read it right now! And if you like it, the books are available both here and on Tom's website-- they are laid out comic book style and in full color. I am very happy to add the hard copies to my collection!
